No matter what line of work or career you set out to do, you are creating your own personal brand. Even having no personal brand is a personal brand. Your personal brand consists of many facets including your personal image, your digital image, your network, work you create, and much more. Pretty much everything contributes to the personal brand you are advertising.
A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another

The way to Personal Branding in 9 Simple Steps
Personal Branding Infographic Breakdown
The infographic does an excellent job of giving you a very simple and easy to follow path to creating your personal brand that way you want. The strategy consists of 3 parts each with 3 steps. Let’s break it down a bit and dive a little deeper.
- Who are you?
- How are you perceived?
- What do you?
- Create your brand!
- Create your ecosystem
- Create your network
- Create original content
- Get involved and share
- Listen and monitor
Who are you?
This is critical to your personal brand. You CANNOT pretend to be someone you are not. The best place to start is to determine your top 5 personal values either from a core values list or from Colin Hiles’ Find your core values in 5 easy steps article.
After that, figure out your skills, your passions, and your Unique Selling Proposition (USP’s). That will help you focus on maximizing the value you and your brand can bring to others.
How are you perceived?
Perform the following exercise to answer this question: Reach out to 10 people that know you personally and ask them the following questions:
- Can you describe me in three words?
- If you had to explain me in 1 sentence what would it be?
- What’s the best memory you have of us?
You can post these questions onto Facebook as well if you’re brave enough. Use the information you get from them to see how you are perceived. You can also dive into this quora question for more ideas on finding out what people think of you.
Also use this time to reconnect with old friends and colleagues. You never know when your old relationships can come in handy.
What do you want to achieve?
This is your self definition of what you want to get out of the work you are going to be. This should be the easiest one to define, but you need to know what the end game is.
Are you in this for fame? for wealth? for security? Each answer has a different mindset and approach.
Create your brand!
This is where you get to use your marketing magic and create the emotions, images, look and feel to the story you are going to share with your audience. Use your story to connect with your audience and really delight them.
Create your logo, website, and social media images to reflect the idea of what you are conveying. Take a look at some examples of award winning logos for some ideas on your own logo.
Create your ecosystem!
Your ecosystem is where you decide to build your audience. Your personal blog is one place, social media, and even physical location can all work.
Keep a good understanding of how your audience wants to communicate with you. That can greatly impact your effectiveness. If your audience wants to communicate via email then email them. If they want to be in a Facebook group together, then use that as a form of communication.
Create your network!
Of course your audience and clients are part of your network, but you seriously need to consider all the moving parts associated with your brand and services.
Do you need strategic partners? suppliers? designers? content creators? web developers? influencers? affiliate marketers? etc…
Consider these questions as you build your network. You don’t want to leave any stone unturned as these are the people that will help you grow your brand and help you provide more impact to more people.
Create original content
This is also where the fun begins. Think about all the ways in which you can engage and delight your audience. Think about the various mediums in which you can create content:
- Blog post
- YouTube Videos
- White papers
- Slide Share Presentations
Get involved and share
Not only should you be creating original content, but also sharing and engaging with others in your field. Be willing to be open and flexible with others.
Be willing to help others and give your time and energy for nothing in return. This will pay off in the long run as it puts you as the go to person in your field.
Remember to maintain the relationships you’re building with influencers, partners, and others. It may be helpful to invest in a Ryze | The Personal Relationship Manager to help you keep those critical connections fresh.
Listen and Monitor
Keep your eyes and ears on the ground and pay attention to any trends or information that may help you improve your brand and services.
You can use sentiment analysis tools to track social media and online engagement. You can also use Google Alerts, Buzzsumo, Tweetchat to track new articles that can be shared, or conversations you can engage in.
Hopefully the infographic created by Sestyle gave you a helpful visual representation about how to build your brand, and hopefully our breakdown of the infographic shed additional light on the simple 9 steps to creating a personal brand.
